Nokia Siemens Networks has announced the success of a real-world test of its 4G, long-term evolution (LTE) wireless technology.

Click here to watch a video featuring Gartner vice president Michael Maoz sharing new insights on innovative technologies and processes shaping the future of customer service.

The test was carried out in an urban environment using 2.6GHz spectrum, and according to reports, was able to reach peak download speeds of 173Mbps. At present, the fastest mobile broadband available is HSDPA, and it offers around 7.2Mbps.The testing, which took place in Berlin, utilised 20MHz of bandwidth in the 2.6GHz spectrum, which is up for a highly competitive auction in the U.K. next year.

The company in a statement pointed out that the trial confirmed that LTE  performance requirements can be met using 3GPP standardised technologies and it realised data rates of more than 100Mbps over distances of several hundred meters, while maintaining excellent throughput at the edge of typical urban mobile radio cells.
