Direct Edge, the U.S. equity market operator, has filed applications with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register its two electronic trading platforms as national securities exchanges.

Direct Edge operates two platforms, EDGX and EDGA, which it wants to operate as facilities to two newly created national securities exchanges.

In a letter to customers and prospects, Direct Edge CEO William O’Brien, said the transition to exchange operations is timed to occur with the launch of its next-generation technology platform in its new state-of-the art data center. “We currently anticipate user acceptance testing to being in the 3rd quarter of 2009, with a launch date in the 4th quarter, pending SEC approval of our applications,” said O’Brien in the letter.
